Harris has fast become one of my favorite authors. I have newly discovered this series; as Amazon never once put this on my radar with it's recommendations, which seem to be bloated with mediocre reads. There computer system that recommends needs updated, as I seriously listen and read over three hundred books a year. Yes my nose is in a book most of my waking hours. Now back to Harris and why you should read her book. First the main protagonist is the regency period equivalent of a bad boy, marches to his own drummer and beat. The author sprinkled enough clues about secrets to keep me riveted by the series. The book has a historically accurate plot with dramatic liberties taken for fiction. The author gives me several smart and strong female characters, including the murder victim. The social, economic and political strife of England is accurately portrayed and the author knows the time period beyond using the word mayhap. The scene when young Tom is in Newgate is gut wrenching and is worth the price of the book. The authors also expands on each of the previous characters opening them up slowly layer by layer. I highly recommend this series.

When Gods Die A Sebastian St Cyr Mystery CS Harris 9780451219688 Books Reviews

I love how Harris weaves so many strands together. The character, especially Sebastian, Cat, and Tom, are complex, complicated, and intriguing. Harris doesn’t give them all away at once, so I enjoy reading to learn more about their pasts, and also about the plots coming, especially in Cat’s case. The mysteries are intriguing, too, but I love these characters even more than solving the mysteries. I’m looking forward to the next book. Plus, listening to the audiobooks, as I do, allows me to hang out more with my all-time favorite audiobook narrator, Davina Porter. Searching for more books read by her is how I found this series in the first place. I know she only selects to read books she loves, and I trust her judgement in books so faithfully, that I just knew I’d enjoy this series. Ms. Porter is my true north, and I will follow her anywhere! She is divine!!!!
These are definitely 5-star within their genre - I mean, we're not talking "War and Peace" here - but they are very good for what they are. Well written, no jarring anachronisms that I've seen, characters about whom one can care, excellent mysteries. A bit swash-buckling. Nothing wrong with that. Very evocative of the period (at least, I think so - I'm old, but I wasn't actually there.). Best read in order for character development & recurring characters through the series. So glad there are 12 books! The mysteries predominate, but there is also a romance-line/subplot; I'm dreading the author's apparent determination to defeat the really wonderful relationship between Devlin & Kat. I don't know how the author will do it, but it's clearly in the works - and I think I shall be almost as frustratedly heart-broken about it as shall they. A sour note. [I read this stuff for escape with a little thought thrown in - not to be made unhappy.] A real page-turner, as are all in the series. This one has to do with the Prince Regent - who is most unflatteringly portrayed throughout the series - & perhaps rightly so - being found at the Pavilion with a dead Lady in his arms; he thought she was playing hard-to-get...bit obtuse there. A satisfyingly involved & convoluted mystery evolves thenceforth. Nice little touches - e.g. Devlin involves himself because the lovely corpse is wearing a necklace last seen gracing the neck of Devlin's mother when she went out for a day's pleasure cruise & ostensibly drowned, when he was about 11 years old.
-Sebastian St. Cyr, the hero of this series, is now being called upon to investigate a mysterious death. The year is 1811, and England is involved in a lengthy war with Napoleon. The common people of England are suffering from lack of basic necessities, and yet, the nobility are still enjoying their lavish parties. King George is recognized as mad and it’s his son, the Prince of Wales, who is now making another lavish ceremony to celebrate his coming ascension to the throne. Although not deemed mad like his father, he treats the treasury of the country as his personal piggy bank as he spends on jewels to give to his feminine conquests, and on his personal indulgences.
-The Prince is now in the seaside area of Brighton, in another of his parties, and he receives a note to meet the young bride of a Lord in a separate room. He had propositioned this woman numerous times, only to be repeatedly rebuffed, but he now rushes to the meeting place with the hopes that her rejection of him will reverse. He approaches her, but she is sitting in an odd position and says nothing to him. It’s not until he reaches out to hold her that he is horrified to see a dagger sticking out of her back. The door to the room opens and the Prince is seen holding the woman who is now dead.
-Lord Jarvis, the cousin of the Prince and the one who is actually manipulating the royal house, knows that this is extremely damaging in appearance to the throne, especially because of the unrest in the kingdom. There is also a fear that a repeat of the French Revolution, where all nobility were pushed aside and a large number of them killed, could very well happen in England. He knows that the death must be investigated and the Prince found to be innocent.
-From his prior dealings with Sebastian St. Cyr, Lord Jarvis knows that he is a man who will not rest until the real killer is found. But he needs something to compel St. Cyr, also known as Lord Devlin, to take a personal interest in the investigation. It turns out that the young woman was found with an unusual necklace around her neck. It’s a one of a kind piece that Sebastian recognized as belonging to his own mother. But the necklace should have been lost as his mother was wearing it 16 years before, when the vessel she was sailing on was lost at sea.
-Devlin immediately sees that there is something wrong with the scene of the murder. There is a surprising lack of blood, and other inconsistencies. He brings in his close friend and army associate, Gibson, who is a surgeon, to do an autopsy, and discovers that it was not the dagger that killed her. She was already dead. He now has to discover the details of her prior movements, and also enlists the help of a young woman, Kat, an actress that’s his deep love. She though, has her own secrets, which she must hide from Devlin.
-The author does an excellent job of allowing more and more of the truth to come out, as so many people that Devlin first investigated, have not been honest about events, and Devlin must separate fact from fiction. At the same time, he must discover how his mother’s necklace, which was supposedly lost at sea with his mother when his mother’s vessel disappeared on a sailing trip, has now surfaced, and was around the neck of the dead woman. The investigation leads to numerous attempts on Devlin’s life as the plot is more involved than he could have ever believed.
-Much of what occurs is based on actual events, though the time line has been altered for the purpose of this story. Also, events have been created to fit with the plot of the story as well. The result, though, is a very well done mystery, and it leaves open many possibilities with the development of the characters and their relationships to each other.
