The pirates have stolen an armory and need a salvage operator's codes to get in.The pirates attack Craig and Torin's ship, kidnap Craig and leave Torin for dead. But Craig knows that, if Torin survives, she will be coming for him and leaves him determined to survive himself until she shows up. After trying to get help from Craig's family with no success, she calls in some old friends who are also former Marines to help her rescue him.
This story was an exciting adventure. I liked that it was told from multiple viewpoints and that the world includes a variety of different alien species. References to the sentient plastic who had manipulated the various Elder and Younger Races into a war made me want to go back and read earlier books in the series again.
I like Torin's character. She is one kick-ass heroine with an iron-clad sense of justice.

The Truth of Valor Valor Novel Tanya Huff Books Reviews
I read this one slowly so I could savor every minute. Craig is kidnapped and Torin is left for dead. She survives. Now look out pirates, Gunnery Sgt Torin Kerr is coming for her man. Full of action, this was an amazing ending to one of the best series I have ever read. Looking forward to the further adventures of ex-gunnery Sgt. Torin Kerr in an upcoming new series .
I’ve had the whole series on my Pad forever, but I didn’t remember reading any of them except the first three. This was the last of them and when I finished, I had to say, “Awesome freaking books!” Go back, start with the first one, and read the, all in order. Travel a lot as it helps and you won’t have to stop to go to bed and have to put these down.
Recommended the series to my Library. Strong female lead character. Little bit of role reversal as her man waits for her to rescue him. But I read all five books and am now about to read the next series.
Another edge-of-your-seat thrill ride, which sets out the prove the axiom, "there is no such thing as an ex gunnery sergeant." This story pits our heroine against SPACE PIRATES!!!! who unlike the version popularized by Johnny Depp, are legitimately awful and frightening. The book also brings together some favorite characters from the previous books to help Torin in her quest to eradicate the piratical scourge and hopefully set up a future series of crusading ex-marines.
All that stuff we throw away has developed a brain. See what its done in the future. This was a great read. Loved reuniting the crew. Excellent writing, zero editing errors, good characters, appropriate length, and my favorite, value. I'm so tired of these writers who want to charge paper prices for electronic books. I believe in fair value for their intellectual property, but some are charging more, significantly more, than justified by merit. Come on people, be like Ms Huff, grow the genre, show your excellence, not your greed.
It's been a while since I delved into huff's universes and this is a nice segue way into her next series.
Torin's first 2 books got a bit repetitive, but kick ass Torin Kerr is always worth the read anyway, and this time we branched out a bit and Tanya huff does not disappoint!
When I first read the summary for this book I was disappointed that Torin was no longer in the core. For me, that was the best part of the series. Eventually I good hooked on the idea that Torin, the life long Gunnery Sergeant, became disillusioned after discovering that the plastic bit aliens were manipulating the war, resulting in massive amounts of needless deaths, just because of a social exercise. This psychological realism is so reminiscent of wars and conflicts past and present as soldiers are released from the military questioning whether their acts of violence and physical sacrifices were for a good cause and meant anything at all. Torin is becoming the ultimate bad ass as she steps away from the world of black and white where the lines of good and evil are so clearly drawn and into the paranoid world of gray where good vs. evil is not so easily defined. Her pent up rage at being manipulated fuels her fire and even her friends are worried that she's finally beginning to snap. In my opinion Torin, who is not so big on psycho battle, begins to navigate through the world of post traumatic stress except that the game of fight or flight stress is still very much real and very much fully on.
I loved the new setting in which the story takes place. It is now a post war setting in the wake of much that has been ruined. Torin, who is now romantically involved with Craig, eek out their living by being salvage operators. The life of the salvage operator is the antithesis of the orderly military life and Torin has a difficult adjustment like so many others who leave war and find it hard to return to civilian life. The salvage operators base station is an accumulation of nomad gypsies where people are scraping together their lives by living off of the scraps and discarded rubble of others. It's a place where thieves and sharks band together because survival demands it. Although one of the primary cultural values is that everyone wants to be be left alone, there is still a bond that ties them together in spirit, however that does not not extend to the cost of dying for one another.
As the story progresses, Craig gets captured by a cut throat band of pirates who have intricate plans for large scale dominance.
Torin and gladly some of her old friends return to the story and we find that ex-Gunny Torin is still the same old Gunny Torin but with a new perspective and in a different light.
